The person who builds the course rather than the person who delivers it. An instructional designer starts from what a learner has to be able to do afterwards and works backwards to the material, the exercises and the assessment. The published study of the field finds design, delivery, technology, communication and collaboration named most often in the job itself, which describes a role that builds and frequently also teaches.

  • Patience with revision, since a course is finished by its third delivery rather than its first.
  • Comfort designing for a room you will never meet.

Do que o trabalho depende

The objective is written before the content, and everything follows from that order. A course built outward from the material teaches what the author knows; one built backward from an objective teaches what the learner has to be able to do, and the two produce identical-looking slide decks with entirely different results in the room. The discipline is holding the order under time pressure, because the fastest way to produce a course is to write down what you know and call the last slide a summary.
