Product marketing manager

Escrito a partir de fontes publicadas

The counterpart to product management, facing the other way. Where a product manager decides what gets built, product marketing decides how it is understood: who it is for, which problem it is against, and which alternatives a buyer will weigh it beside. The body of knowledge treats the two as one domain with two halves, which is the most accurate description of how they actually work.

Como é o dia

  • Positioning: choosing the comparison a buyer will make, which is a decision rather than a description.
  • Writing the messages, and then the artefacts everybody else repeats them from.
  • Preparing launches, where the product, the sellers, the partners and the support organisation have to arrive on the same day saying the same thing.
  • Equipping the field: the material a seller uses in a room where the product manager is absent.
  • Studying competitors closely enough to describe them fairly, since a caricature loses the deal it was written for.

Pelo que responde

  • Positioning that survives contact with a buyer who has alternatives.
  • Claims that the product can support, since support inherits everything overstated.
  • The organisation describing the product consistently across every channel it uses.

Como é medido

  • Pipeline influenced, and win rates against named competitors.
  • Launch execution and the adoption that follows.
  • Sales enablement: material produced, and material actually used.

De quem recebe

Product management
What is being built and why, early enough to prepare.
The field and the channel
What buyers actually ask, and where deals are lost.
Customers
The words they use, which outrank the words the company prefers.

A quem serve

Sales and the channel
A story that holds up under questioning, and the material to tell it with.
Buyers
An accurate account of what the product is for.
Product management
Market evidence, which is the input a roadmap decision is made against.

Quem mais tem interesse

  • Support, who meet every promise afterwards.
  • The training organisation, whose material carries the same claims into a classroom.
  • Partners, who repeat the positioning in markets the vendor never enters.

O que exige

  • Writing plainly about a technical thing for a reader who has ten minutes.
  • Enough depth to be corrected by an engineer and to argue back where the correction is cosmetic.
  • Judgement about claims, since the cost of an overstated one lands on somebody else.
  • Comfort with attribution that stays partial, because influence resists measurement.

Do que o trabalho depende

Positioning is choosing the competitor set, and that choice decides the argument before it starts. A product placed against the wrong alternative competes on features a buyer has already stopped caring about; placed against the right one, the same product reads as obvious. The work is therefore an act of judgement about the market rather than an act of writing about the product, and it is the part where a good writer with market sense outperforms a better writer without it.
