Management consultant
Escrito a partir de fontes publicadas
The adviser who is paid for judgement rather than for hands. Where a consulting engineer implements a design, a management consultant is engaged to work out what should be done and to make the case for it. The profession has a competence framework and a certification behind it, structured across three levels of progression, which is a useful reminder that advisory work has a standard even where a client is buying a person.
De quem recebe
- The sponsor
- The brief, the budget and the political shape of the problem.
- The client's staff
- How things actually work, offered at whatever candour the situation permits.
- The firm
- Method, precedent and the people to staff the work.
A quem serve
- The sponsoring executive
- A defensible basis for a decision they own.
- The client organisation
- A view assembled by somebody with no stake in the current arrangement.
- The teams who implement
- Reasoning clear enough to act on after the consultant leaves.
Do que o trabalho depende
The most valuable advice frequently ends the engagement, and the measurement rewards the engagement continuing. A consultant who finds that the client already has the capability and needs a decision rather than a programme has done the best available work and produced the smallest available invoice. Firms that survive on reputation make room for that outcome and say so at the outset; the profession's own competence framework puts professional behaviour underneath every technical competence for exactly this reason.
