Netcraft
The company that has counted the web's servers every month since 1995, and now takes down a third of the world's phishing.
Netcraft is a cybersecurity company founded in Bath, England, by Mike Prettejohn in 1994 and run from London since 2023. For most of the web's life it has been known for one monthly table: the Web Server Survey, released in 1995, which asks every hostname it can find what software answers, and so became the public record of what the web runs on, cited in every argument about web server market share since. The same crawling and classifying machinery, turned on criminals rather than on servers, became the business: detecting phishing sites, scams and fake apps and getting them taken off the internet.
The company's own timeline runs from the 1995 survey to the SSL Survey of 1996, a fraud detection service in 2004, a phishing feed in 2005 and the first takedowns in 2006, the first automated takedowns in 2013, machine-learning models from 2014, and in 2024 a conversational scam intelligence service. Today it states that it carries out a third of the world's phishing takedowns, with a median time from detection to removal of thirty-three minutes, and counts among its customers sixteen of the fifty largest banks and nine of the fifty largest governments.
It was privately held and unfunded for nearly three decades. On 18 July 2023 Spectrum Equity invested more than $100 million, the company's first outside capital, and Ryan Woodley became chief executive; the headquarters moved from Bath to London in the same year. On 12 September 2023 Netcraft bought FraudWatch International of Melbourne, an online brand protection company with a round-the-clock security operations centre, which gave it a base in Australia.
Netcraft Ltd, the legal person, was incorporated on 4 September 1987 and is registered at 63 Catherine Place, London, the address the site gives for its headquarters; the business the record describes began in 1994, and the card carries that year.
Why it belongs in a networking record: the Web Server Survey is the longest continuous public measurement of what the web runs on, and anyone who has argued about market share for Apache, IIS or nginx has cited it. The takedown business is the practical end of the same discipline this site teaches on its security pages: a phishing site is a DNS record, a certificate and a web server, and removing it means knowing who to ask and in what order.
