MetaGeek - Wi-Spy, inSSIDer and Chanalyzer

A nights-and-weekends spectrum analyser from Boise that became the Wi-Fi field kit, then changed hands twice in two years.

MetaGeek was born in the summer of 2005, in founder Ryan Woodings' words, as a nights and weekends side project in Boise, Idaho. Shortly after shipping the first Wi-Spy he quit his day job and ran the company from a home office and living room for a year before renting space in a local tech incubator; by 2010 inSSIDer and the Wi-Spy DBx for 2.4 and 5 GHz spectrum analysis had established MetaGeek as an innovator in Wi-Fi tools, and Eye P.A. and Wi-Spy Air followed.

On 15 April 2022 Auvik, the Waterloo, Ontario network management company that had taken $250 million from Great Hill Partners the previous July, acquired MetaGeek for undisclosed terms. Woodings' own announcement put the logic in one line: the opportunity to merge MetaGeek's Wi-Fi expertise with Auvik's network management expertise.

Two and a half years later the tools moved again. On 7 October 2024 Oscium, the Oklahoma City maker of wireless test equipment, announced that it had acquired MetaGeek, with Bryan Lee, Oscium's president, leading the combined company, Brian Tuttle, MetaGeek's co-founder, returning to lead the software development side, and no financial details disclosed. Wi-Spy, inSSIDer and Chanalyzer sit today beside Oscium's own Nomad analyser, and metageek.com redirects to oscium.com.

The record keeps MetaGeek because of what the first Wi-Spy was: spectrum analysis, previously a bench instrument's job, in a device a field engineer could afford. Everything in the wireless survey trade that followed - the Ekahau Sidekick, the TamoGraph survey, the Nomad - inherits that move of the instrument from the lab to the laptop bag.
