Dimension Data - integration at continental scale
A systems integrator that grew out of one region and was absorbed into a Japanese carrier.
Dimension Data built a large network integration and managed services business, and its arc is the one this timeline keeps recording from different starting points: an integrator grows past the region that produced it, becomes attractive to a carrier that wants delivery capability, and is acquired.
Dimension Data was founded in Johannesburg in 1983 by Keith McLachlan, Werner Sievers, Jeremy Ord, Peter Neale and Kevin Hamilton, and listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange on 15 July 1987. Its decisive move came in 1991, when it became the official South African distributor for Cisco Systems - a position taken at the moment internetworking was becoming the centre of enterprise computing rather than after.
It is the clearest counterexample in this catalogue to the assumption that global technology integrators come from the United States or Europe. From a country then under sanctions and largely cut off from international markets, it built to nearly fifty countries and around 5.8 billion dollars of revenue by 2010, buying its way across regions through acquisition.
Nippon Telegraph and Telephone acquired it in 2010 for 3.2 billion dollars, and from 1 July 2019 everything outside the Middle East and Africa was folded into NTT Ltd, with the brand disappearing into NTT DATA by 2024. That is the ordinary end for a large integrator: they are bought by carriers, because a carrier that sells connectivity wants the company that decides what the customer connects.
The trajectory is worth carrying because it recurs in every market including Brazil. A local integrator builds a relationship with a vendor early, grows on that relationship, expands regionally, and is eventually acquired by something larger that wants the customer list. The name on the invoice changes; the engineers, usually, do not.
