CommScope - the cable house that bought Bell Labs' structured-cabling brand, and sold it again
Coaxial cable from Hickory, North Carolina, the SYSTIMAX structured-cabling brand bought from Avaya in 2004, and a 10.5 billion dollar sale to Amphenol in 2026.
CommScope began in 1961 as Comm/Scope, a division of Superior Continental that developed cable-television systems, and became a company in August 1976 when Frank Drendel and Jearld Leonhardt founded it in Hickory, North Carolina, having raised 5.1 million dollars. It spent the 1990s inside General Instrument and was spun off as a public company when General Instrument split in three in 1997. For the networking trade it matters for one acquisition above all: on 31 January 2004 it bought Avaya's Connectivity Solutions business, and with it SYSTIMAX, the structured-cabling system that began as Bell Laboratories' Premises Distribution System.
SYSTIMAX is the older story. In 1983 Bell Laboratories developed the first structured cabling system and called it a Premises Distribution System, a controlled architecture for voice, data and video wiring inside a building; in 1989 AT&T branded it the SYSTIMAX Structured Cabling System. The division went to Lucent Technologies when AT&T divested it in 1996, to Avaya when Lucent spun off its enterprise business in 2000, and to CommScope in 2004, for 250 million dollars in cash and about 1.8 million CommScope shares. Three owners in eight years, and the cabling in the walls of the buildings never noticed.
The company then bought its way into every layer of the plant. Andrew Corporation, the antenna and wireless-infrastructure maker, for 2.6 billion dollars in 2007; TE Connectivity's broadband network solutions division in 2015; Arris, with the Ruckus wireless and switching business inside it, completed on 4 April 2019, the price of which Wikipedia's own citations give as 7.4 and as 4.93 billion dollars, recorded here as a discrepancy. The home-networks business went to Vantiva in October 2023 for a quarter of Vantiva's shares.
Then it sold the part the trade knew it for. On 4 August 2025 Amphenol agreed to buy the Connectivity and Cable Solutions business, fibre and copper connectivity for data centres, communications networks and buildings, for 10.5 billion dollars in cash, a business with about 3.6 billion dollars of expected 2025 sales and more than fifteen thousand employees; the sale closed on 12 January 2026, Amphenol expecting the business to generate about 4.1 billion dollars in 2026 with some twenty thousand employees. Two days later the listed parent, by then headquartered in Richardson, Texas, renamed itself Vistance Networks, trading as VISN from 14 January 2026, keeping the access-network business, rebranded Aurora Networks, and Ruckus. The CommScope name and SYSTIMAX went with the sale: commscope.com now signs itself CommScope Technologies LLC, an Amphenol company. Ruckus, as its own entry records, was sold on to Belden in May 2026.
The lesson of the card is the one the structured-cabling credential on this site teaches. A building's cabling plant outlives every piece of equipment plugged into it and most of the companies that sold it: the SYSTIMAX plant certified in 1998 was designed under one owner, installed under another, warranted by a third and is now sold by a fourth, and the twisted pairs in the wall are the same.
