O engenheiro que em 1788 pôs um regulador de esferas girantes numa máquina a vapor, criando o ancestral mecânico de toda malha de controle da computação.
A atribuição merece cuidado: Huygens já construíra reguladores centrífugos no século XVII para moinhos, e Watt ADAPTOU um em vez de inventá-lo - embora a adaptação tenha importado o bastante para ele ser creditado assim mesmo. O que o dispositivo é, com precisão, é uma malha fechada sem humano dentro: a velocidade da máquina levanta os pesos, os pesos fecham a válvula, a válvula desacelera a máquina. James Clerk Maxwell transformou aquilo em matemática em 1868, e tudo, de controle de congestionamento a escalonamento automático e à refrigeração de um data center, é descendente daquele artigo, e não do equipamento.
