Stands for: Unshielded Twisted Pair

Unshielded twisted pair - the copper cabling that carries almost every wired office connection.

UTP bundles four pairs of wires, each pair twisted to cancel interference - no shield, just geometry. It is the default medium of structured cabling: cheap, flexible, terminated on RJ45, and specified by category (Cat 5e, 6, 6A) for what speeds and distances it supports. When shielding is added for noisy environments, the cable stops being 'U' and enters shielded-twisted-pair territory.

Unshielded twisted pair carries essentially all copper Ethernet, and the twisting is the entire engineering idea. Two conductors carrying equal and opposite signals pick up interference identically, and the receiver subtracts, so noise common to both cancels out.

That is why the untwisting matters at termination. Stripping too much jacket and untwisting the pairs to reach the punchdown degrades exactly the property the cable relies on, and it is the most common cause of a link that certifies badly or negotiates a lower speed than it should. Shielded variants exist for genuinely noisy environments and require proper bonding to ground, which if done wrong performs worse than unshielded cable would have.
