PPP
acronymnetworking
Stands for: Point-to-Point Protocol
The Point-to-Point Protocol - the standard way to run IP (and more) over a serial link, from dial-up to modern broadband.
PPP frames a point-to-point connection with a Link Control Protocol to bring the line up and Network Control Protocols to carry IP and other layer-3 traffic, plus built-in authentication via PAP or CHAP. It replaced the cruder SLIP, powered the dial-up internet, and lives on inside PPPoE and PPTP. When a broadband link authenticates with a username and password, PPP is usually underneath.
