The Serial Line Internet Protocol - the minimal, pre-PPP way to put IP packets on a serial line.
SLIP does almost nothing: it marks IP packet boundaries on a serial link and no more - no addressing negotiation, no authentication, no support for protocols other than IP, no error detection. It carried the early dial-up internet until PPP, with all the features SLIP lacked, replaced it. A compressed variant (CSLIP) squeezed TCP/IP headers. It survives mainly as history and in tiny embedded contexts.
