Palo Alto Networks' security-operations family, announced in February 2019: detection, response, and automation for the SOC.
Cortex arrived in February 2019 as an AI-based security platform together with Cortex XDR, the product that pushed 'XDR' into the industry vocabulary as detection and response across endpoint, network, and cloud telemetry rather than endpoint alone. The family grew by acquisition and iteration: Cortex XSOAR from Demisto (2019) for orchestration and automation, Cortex Xpanse from Expanse (2020) for attack-surface management, and Cortex XSIAM (2022) as the AI-driven SOC platform folding those capabilities together. In practice the name marks the operations side of the house, where Strata enforces and Prisma covers the cloud.
