Stands for: Control Objectives for Information and Related Technologies (ISACA)

ISACA's governance framework for enterprise IT - the auditor's answer to the question ITIL doesn't ask: who decides, who is accountable, and how do we prove it.

COBIT (now versioned as COBIT 2019) descends from ISACA's audit heritage, and it shows: the framework separates GOVERNANCE (evaluate, direct, monitor - the board's job) from MANAGEMENT (plan, build, run, monitor - the executives' job) and maps objectives, processes, and maturity so that control can be designed and audited. Where ITIL tells operations how to run services, COBIT tells the organization how to govern the whole IT estate - which is why the two are exam-question neighbors and real-world colleagues: COBIT sets the requirements, ITIL is one way to meet them.
