The regular, automated check-ins a compromised host makes to its command server.
Malware beacons to ask "any orders?" on an interval. That rhythm, even when the traffic is encrypted and disguised, is a strong detection signal: humans and normal apps do not phone the same unfamiliar host on a metronome.
