A licensed radio service for self-training, experimentation, and non-commercial communication, with allocations across the whole spectrum.
The licence is the distinction: examinations, a callsign issued under an ITU treaty allocation, and permission to build and modify your own transmitting equipment, which is almost unique in modern radio. Amateurs run everything from Morse on a wire antenna to microwave links and satellites. The service earns its spectrum partly through emergency communications, because a station with a battery and an antenna keeps working when towers, exchanges, and the internet do not.
