Stands for: Nullcon - India's flagship hacker conference, grown from the null community
India's flagship hacker conference, grown out of null - the country's largest open security community - and held on the beaches of Goa since 2010.
null (styled n|u) is a registered not-for-profit and India's largest active security community, with chapters across Bangalore, Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, and beyond, built on free monthly meets and open exchange of research. Nullcon is its conference arm - run and marketed by Payatu - and it scaled the community's ethos into an international event: hardcore technical talks, trainings, a hardware village, and the Goa setting that became part of the brand (a Berlin edition extends the season). Its rise tracks India's rise in the global security industry, and for the subcontinent's researchers it is the home main stage.
Nullcon grew out of null, the registered not-for-profit that is India's largest active security community, built on free monthly meets and open chapters across Bangalore, Mumbai, Pune, Delhi and beyond. The conference is the annual visible peak of something that runs all year.
That order matters, and it is the reverse of the usual. Most conferences are events that later grow a community; null was a community that eventually grew a conference, which means the meets are the substance and the conference is the summary. A free monthly meeting in a dozen cities reaches vastly more people over a year than any annual event, and it reaches the ones who could never afford a ticket.
The chapter model is worth studying by anyone trying to build a technical community elsewhere. It is cheap, it does not depend on sponsorship to survive, it scales by finding one committed organizer per city rather than by growing a central operation, and it produces local expertise that stays local. Conferences are visible and communities are durable, and the ones that last usually got the order right.
