An edge device in an Ethernet fabric that encapsulates traffic into the backbone.
A Backbone Edge Bridge (IEEE 802.1ah) sits at the boundary of a provider-backbone or SPBM fabric, wrapping customer frames in backbone MAC headers so the core forwards on backbone addresses - the entry and exit points of the fabric.
A Backbone Edge Bridge is where customer traffic enters a provider backbone fabric and where the encapsulation happens. It wraps the customer frame inside a provider MAC header, which is what keeps the core from ever learning customer addresses, and it is the only place in the fabric that needs to know a service exists.
That containment is the point of the architecture. A core switch forwards on backbone addresses alone, so its address table stays proportional to the size of the fabric rather than to the number of endpoints connected to it. Adding ten thousand devices at the edges changes nothing in the middle, which is what makes very large layer two fabrics practical at all.
The operational consequence is that provisioning is an edge activity. Extending a service means configuring the bridges at the two ends and nothing between them, so there is no core change window, no reconfiguration of transit devices, and no risk of a mistake in the middle affecting services that had nothing to do with the change. That property, rather than any raw performance claim, is what makes the model attractive to people who have spent a career extending VLANs across a campus.
