thundering herd

jargon

programmingcloud

What happens when a crowd of clients all wake up, retry, or reconnect at exactly the same moment.

A cache entry expires and a thousand requests hit the origin at once; a switch reboots and every device re-authenticates together. The fixes are jitter, backoff, and request coalescing - anything that turns a stampede back into a queue.

Also known as: cache stampede, dogpile
