The North American 1.544 Mb/s digital carrier - 24 channels of 64 kb/s, the DS1, the leased line a generation of WANs was built from.
T1 comes from Bell's T-carrier hierarchy: 24 DS0 timeslots of 64 kb/s each plus framing yields 1.544 Mb/s, delivered channelized (each slot its own voice or data circuit) or clear-channel as one pipe. The ladder continues to T3/DS3 at 44.736 Mb/s (28 T1s), above which SONET's OC levels take over. For decades 'a T1' meant business-grade connectivity itself - Frame Relay, PPP leased lines, and PBX trunks all rode it - and its 24-channel arithmetic still surfaces in PRI voice (23B+D). North America and Japan territory; the rest of the world runs E1.
