Stands for: Brazilian informatics market reserve (1984-1992)
The Brazilian policy that legally reserved the domestic computer market for nationally-owned companies from 1984 to 1992.
Lei 7.232/1984 established the Politica Nacional de Informatica with an eight-year term written into it, and it passed unanimously on a coalition of nationalist military officers, domestic industry, and the left opposition. In practice it produced clones of the ZX81, Apple II, MSX, and IBM PC sold late and expensive, a smuggling route through Paraguay, and a Section 301 trade fight with Washington that ended in Reagan announcing sanctions in 1987. The reserve expired on schedule in October 1992. The hardware bet failed, but the engineering generation it trained is a direct ancestor of Brazilian banking automation and of firms like Cyclades and Datacom.
