Hackers (1995)

lore

securityops culture

The rollerblading, neon-soaked teen movie whose depiction of hacking is almost entirely fantasy and whose cultural influence on hackers is almost entirely real - source of the war cry 'Hack the planet!'

Practitioners mock it and quote it in the same breath. Underneath the flying 3D filesystems it gets two things exactly right: that social engineering and dumpster diving beat technical wizardry most days, and that the underground was a social scene before it was a profession. Its promotional website was famously defaced by real hackers within days, which is the most fitting review any film has ever received.
