the Hacker Manifesto

lore

hackingops culture

A short 1986 essay, written after its author's arrest, that became the defining statement of hacker curiosity.

Published in Phrack under the handle The Mentor, it frames hacking as a hunger to understand rather than to harm, and its line about being judged for curiosity resonated widely. It remains the most quoted text in hacker culture, for better and worse.
