a hacker scene (regional scenes)
termhackingops culture
The community of a place: the people, meetings, boards, conferences, hackerspaces and shared history that make hacking a local culture rather than an individual hobby. Distinct from the Scene, which in release culture means the warez distribution world specifically.
Scenes differ by what they organised around, and the differences persist for decades. The American scene formed around crews and rivalry and was shaped by prosecution; the German one organised as a formal association and ended up testifying before its constitutional court; the Australian one produced a definitive book instead of a legend; the Brazilian one grew out of civil-society networking and a fraud underground, and now runs one of the densest conference calendars anywhere. This site treats each as a subject in its own right rather than as footnotes to the American story.
