The Palo Alto research lab that invented the modern computer's furniture, and famously let others sell it.
Xerox's Palo Alto Research Center produced, in one astonishing 1970s run, the graphical user interface, the laser printer, Ethernet, object-oriented Smalltalk, and the Alto workstation that tied them together. Apple and Microsoft commercialized the GUI; 3Com commercialized Ethernet; Xerox kept the printers. PARC became the standing parable about the distance between inventing the future and owning it, and its alumni seeded half of this site's other stories, from Ethernet to Juniper's founder.
Xerox PARC in the 1970s produced the graphical user interface, the mouse as a mainstream device, WYSIWYG editing, laser printing, object-oriented programming in Smalltalk and Ethernet. The Alto workstation combined most of it into a machine that looks recognisably modern in photographs taken fifty years ago.
The standard telling is that Xerox failed to commercialize any of it and Apple and Microsoft took the ideas. That is roughly true and unfairly simple. Xerox did commercialize the laser printer, which earned the company more than the rest was ever likely to, and the Alto's economics in 1973 were genuinely impossible: the machine cost more than a house to build. A copier company declining to bet itself on desktop computing was not obviously wrong at the time.
What the story actually illustrates is that invention and distribution are separate capabilities. PARC had extraordinary researchers and a parent company whose sales force, incentives and customers were organized around a different business entirely. Ideas do not travel from a lab to the world on merit; they travel through an organization that is built to carry them, and building that is a different problem from having the idea.
