Stands for: Redundant Array of Independent Disks
Combining several disks so the array survives losing one - or more, depending on the layout chosen.
The sentence that has to accompany it is that RAID is not a backup: it protects against a disk dying, and copies a deletion, a corruption or an encryption faithfully to every member. The second operational fact is rebuild - replacing a failed disk puts the array under sustained load precisely when its redundancy is gone, which is when the second failure tends to arrive.
