George Hotz (geohot)
termhackingsecurity
The New Jersey teenager who in 2007, at seventeen, performed the first unlock of the original iPhone from AT&T, and who in 2010 published the root keys of the PlayStation 3 after Sony removed its Linux feature.
Sony's lawsuit against him produced one of the largest backlashes in the history of the industry: Anonymous launched Operation Sony, and the PlayStation Network breach that followed weeks later cost the company a hundred million accounts and a reported hundreds of millions of dollars. Whatever the direct causal chain, the episode is the standard case study in how suing a researcher can cost far more than the bug ever would. Hotz went on to work in artificial intelligence and self-driving cars.
