The fifth generation of mobile networking, defined as much by network architecture as by radio speed.
The headline figure is throughput and the durable changes are elsewhere: a core network built as software functions rather than fixed boxes, and network slicing, which lets one physical network present several logical ones with different guarantees. The security consequence follows the architecture - when the core is software running in data centres, mobile network security becomes a cloud and supply-chain problem rather than a telecom one.
