Colombia's leading hacker conference, grown out of the DragonJAR community - and deliberately delivered entirely in Spanish.
DragonJAR began as one of the Spanish-speaking world's most active security communities and forums, and its Medellin conference (DragonJARCON) inherited that character: technical talks, tools, and research by and for the regional community, with the all-Spanish commitment as an explicit accessibility position - world-class content should not require English. Alongside Ekoparty and 8.8 it forms the spine of the Latin American circuit, and its speaker alumni travel the other events as a who's-who of hispanophone security research.
DragonJAR grew from a Colombian security community and its Spanish-language forum into a conference, and the sequence matters: the community existed first and the event was its annual gathering rather than the reverse.
Its significance is linguistic before it is technical. A great deal of security knowledge exists only in English, which puts a comprehension tax on every practitioner who does not read it fluently, and that tax compounds because the material is dense and precision matters. A forum and a conference operating in Spanish removed that tax for a region, and the archive of accumulated questions and answers is arguably worth more than any individual event.
The pattern recurs across every non-English technical community and is consistently undervalued by the English-speaking one. Translation is not the same as native-language production: a community that discusses problems in its own language develops its own vocabulary, its own worked examples and its own experts, rather than remaining a downstream consumer of somebody else's. That is a structural difference in how expertise develops, not merely a convenience.
