Cyberpunk (Hafner and Markoff, 1991)

lore

ops culturehacking

Katie Hafner and John Markoff's 1991 book telling three long-form stories from the 1980s underground: the young Kevin Mitnick and his Los Angeles circle, the German KGB hackers around Hanover, and Robert Morris and his worm.

It is the first serious attempt at journalism about this subculture rather than panic reporting about it, and its Los Angeles section preserves some of the only substantial published material on Susan Headley, whom later histories mostly dropped. Mitnick disputed his portrayal for decades. Read alongside The Cuckoo's Egg and Underground, it completes the trio of contemporaneous accounts that fixed the 1980s underground in the record before anyone could tidy it up.
