Vendor lineage

SpiderLabs

Trustwave's research, testing and incident response team, carried under its own name through three owners.

SpiderLabs is the research, penetration testing, threat hunting and incident response team that Trustwave built and that LevelBlue now presents as LevelBlue SpiderLabs. It is not a company and never was; it is on this record because it is the part of Trustwave the industry knows by name, and because that name survived the owners.

Trustwave's own description of the team in January 2011 already reads as a mature practice: an advanced security team focused on forensics, ethical hacking and application security testing, with hundreds of forensic investigations and thousands of ethical hacking exercises behind it, a research team producing proof-of-concept tools, and members speaking at Black Hat, DEF CON, OWASP and SANS. A 2014 datasheet counted more than a hundred people across more than ten countries; a 2022 description organises them into four teams, Security Research, Security Testing, Threat Hunting, and Digital Forensics and Incident Response, publishing more than fifty blogs and advisories a year and disclosing dozens of vendor vulnerabilities, with tools such as Responder, SocialMapper and CrackQ released to the field.

When LevelBlue completed its acquisition of Trustwave on 19 August 2025 its release called SpiderLabs the elite Trustwave team providing threat research, intelligence and threat hunting, and LevelBlue's pages now carry the name as LevelBlue SpiderLabs. The founding year of the team is not stated in any document read for this record, and the card carries no year rather than an invented one.

Why it belongs in a networking record: the names that survive acquisitions are the ones with a reputation of their own, and a research team whose advisories, tools and reports were cited for two decades is the kind of unit a buyer keeps and a reader recognises.
