Vendor lineage

BeyondTrust

Founded as Symark in 1985, renamed for a company it bought in 2009, and merged into a company that took its name in 2018.

BeyondTrust sells privileged access management: the vaulting and brokering of administrative credentials, least-privilege enforcement on endpoints, and secure remote access for support desks and vendors. The company behind the name was founded in 1985 as Symark, by Bob Sommers and Doug Yarrow; in 2009 Symark acquired a company called BeyondTrust and rebranded itself under that name, and it is that line the record follows.

The product set was assembled by acquisition through the 2010s: Likewise Software in 2011, eEye Digital Security, the vulnerability management company, in May 2012, and Blackbird Group in December 2012, giving a privilege company a vulnerability scanner and an Active Directory toolset beside its core.

The decisive event is the 2018 combination. Bomgar, the remote-support company Joel Bomgaars had started as ExpertVNC in 2003, was bought by Francisco Partners in April 2018; on 13 September 2018 Bomgar announced it would acquire BeyondTrust from an affiliate of Veritas Capital and operate the combined company under the BeyondTrust name, headquartered in Atlanta with offices in Phoenix, more than 19,000 customers, and Bomgar's chief executive, Matt Dircks, at its head. The buyer took the name of the bought.

In December 2024 the company's remote support service was the path of a state-level intrusion: an API key for its Remote Support SaaS was stolen and used to reach the United States Treasury, which disclosed on 30 December 2024 that unclassified documents had been accessed. The incident put a privileged access vendor's own access in the headlines, which is the risk the category exists to manage.

Why it belongs in a networking record: privileged access is where the perimeter of the 1990s ended up. The administrator's password, the service account and the vendor's support tunnel are the credentials every later breach report names, and the companies that vault them, this one and the CyberArk line that became Idira, are the identity layer this site's security pages keep returning to.
