Co-author of Firewalls and Internet Security in 1994, one of the first books on the subject, written from running AT&T's internet gateway - and the author of the account of watching an intruder inside a deliberately prepared environment.
An Evening with Berferd is the piece people remember, and it is where the honeypot argument enters the literature: rather than eject the intruder, he watched, recorded and learned what the attacker was actually trying. The book's most durable line is a warning against its own subject, and the authors made it themselves - in many of the access arrangements they studied, the only secure component was the firewall, which attackers simply went around to reach the machines it was said to protect.
