The remote-administration tool for Windows released by the Cult of the Dead Cow at DEF CON in August 1998, its name a joke at the expense of Microsoft's BackOffice. It gave an operator near-total control of a remote Windows machine over a small, quiet network channel.
cDc's argument was that Windows security was so weak the only way to force the issue was to hand everyone the proof; Microsoft's argument was that a tool is not a lecture. Both were right, and the episode set the enduring template for the full-disclosure debate. Back Orifice also popularised the remote access trojan as a category, and its 1999 successor BO2k was released as open source - which is how a stunt became, briefly, a legitimate administration tool.
