the WANK worm

Worms Against Nuclear Killers: the anti-nuclear worm that hit NASA and US Department of Energy DECnet systems in October 1989, days before the Galileo probe launched with a plutonium power source. Infected terminals greeted operators with a banner announcing WANK and the line 'You talk of times of peace for all, and then prepare for war.'
It is generally regarded as the first hacktivist worm - protest rather than profit or curiosity - and it forced NASA into a scramble at the worst possible moment. Never definitively attributed, it is widely believed to have come from the Melbourne scene later chronicled in the book Underground, whose researcher was Julian Assange.
