The account of Kevin Mitnick's 1995 capture written by Tsutomu Shimomura, whose systems Mitnick had broken into, with New York Times reporter John Markoff - later filmed as Track Down.
As technical writing on the intrusion itself it is genuinely valuable: the TCP sequence-prediction attack is explained by the person whose machines it was used against. As history it is contested at almost every turn, and the FREE KEVIN campaign treated the book and its authors as part of the injustice rather than observers of it. The lesson worth extracting is about sourcing: when the investigator, the journalist and the publisher are the same three-way relationship, the resulting record needs reading with that structure in mind.
