Steven Bellovin
loreCo-author of the 1994 firewall book, an IETF Security Area director, a member of the National Academy of Engineering, and one of the creators of Usenet years earlier.
His standing description of his own field is the most useful sentence in it: he works on networks, security, and especially why the two do not get along. That is not a joke about culture. Networking optimises for reachability and security for restriction, and almost every operational argument between the two teams is a rediscovery of that. His early papers on weaknesses in the TCP/IP protocol suite named attacks - sequence number prediction, DNS spoofing - years before anyone was running them at scale.
