The Sunnyvale startup that shipped the first multiport Ethernet switch in 1990 and, four years later, became one of Cisco's most consequential acquisitions.
Founded in the late 1980s by Vinod Bhardwaj and Larry Blair and named after Bhardwaj's wife (Kalpana means 'imagination' in Sanskrit), the company introduced the seven-port EtherSwitch in 1990, inventing Ethernet switching and with it the modern LAN: dedicated bandwidth per port instead of a shared, collision-prone medium. It followed with full-duplex Ethernet and EtherChannel link aggregation. Cisco completed its acquisition on December 7, 1994, for about 200 million dollars, and Kalpana's switching lineage runs straight into this site's Cisco and Riverstone histories, where a Kalpana engineer later co-founded Yago. Sources put the founding anywhere from 1987 to 1990; the 1990 first-switch milestone is the fixed point.
Kalpana was the company that built the first Ethernet switch, and the product changed what Ethernet fundamentally was. Before it, a network was a shared medium where every station heard everything and collisions were normal; after it, each port had a dedicated path and the collision domain shrank to a single link.
The consequences were larger than a performance improvement. Full duplex became possible because there was no longer contention to avoid, aggregate capacity stopped being a fixed number divided among users and started scaling with the number of ports, and the CSMA/CD mechanism that defines Ethernet in every textbook became vestigial on modern networks. The name and the frame format survived; the access method did not.
Its commercial history is the ordinary one for that era: acquired by Cisco in the mid-1990s and absorbed. The pattern is worth noticing, because switching was the change that let Ethernet defeat Token Ring, FDDI and every other contender, and the company that made it possible exists now only as a footnote. Being first to a foundational idea and being the one who profits from it are different achievements.
