The worldwide series of loosely affiliated community security conferences begun in 2009 by Mike Dahn, Jack Daniel and Chris Nickerson - named after the B-side of a vinyl record, and started from talks that Black Hat had rejected.
The origin is the whole design. Rather than argue with a selection committee, the organisers ran the rejected talks as their own event, then released the format so anyone could start a local edition. That is why BSides is a circuit rather than an institution: dozens of independent conferences sharing a name, a spirit and nothing else. In regions with one dominant or closed event, the local BSides is usually the open counterpart that appears beside it - a pattern visible in São Paulo, across Brazil, and in Peru.
