The current generation of wireless security, replacing the shared-key handshake that allowed offline password guessing.
The substantive change is the handshake: the older scheme let anyone who captured a connection attempt guess the passphrase offline at their own pace, and the new one does not, which is why a weak passphrase stops being catastrophic on day one. It also encrypts open networks so that a public hotspot is no longer readable by everyone present. Adoption is the usual story - mixed mode keeps the old handshake available for old clients, and a network in mixed mode has the old properties for anyone who asks for them.
