lamer, noob, newbie, script kiddie
jargonhackingops culture
The underground's ladder of contempt, and the distinctions matter. A newbie or newb is simply new and willing to learn. A noob (or n00b) is new and unwilling - demanding answers, ignoring the manual. A lamer is neither new nor learning, claiming credit for others' work. A script kiddie runs tools they cannot read or modify.
The gradations encode the culture's actual value system: ignorance is fine and temporary, laziness and posturing are not, and status comes from what you can build or break yourself. RTFM and read the fine manual belong to the same tradition of harsh induction. The words also matter operationally - script kiddie describes a real and large threat class, since mass-scanning commodity exploits compromise more systems every year than any elite crew ever did.
