São Paulo's crowdfunded cryptoactivism marathon: 24 uninterrupted hours of privacy, security, and digital-rights activities - free, volunteer-run, and pointedly without corporate sponsorship.
Born from the international CryptoParty movement's teach-anyone-crypto ethos, CryptoRave scaled the house party into one of the world's largest events of its kind: talks, hands-on workshops, install fests, and art running through the night in public venues (the 10th edition, 2026, filled the Biblioteca Mário de Andrade under the theme '85 seconds to the end of the world'). The funding model is the politics: collective financing instead of sponsors, so the program answers to no vendor. Where most security events talk to professionals, CryptoRave deliberately talks to everyone - journalists, activists, neighbors - on the theory that privacy fails unless it is popular.
CryptoRave grew out of the international CryptoParty movement, whose premise was that anyone can be taught to protect their own communications, and scaled the format from a house gathering into one of the largest events of its kind anywhere. It runs overnight in public venues, mixing talks, hands-on workshops, install fests and art.
The overnight-in-public choice is not incidental. Holding it in a library or cultural centre rather than a hotel makes it accessible to people who could never expense a conference ticket, and running it through the night gives it the feel of an occupation rather than a seminar. Attendees leave with encrypted messaging configured on their own devices, which is a different outcome from having learned that encryption exists.
The politics are explicit and worth stating rather than sanitizing. It emerged from a movement that treats privacy as a civil right and surveillance as a thing to be resisted, in a country with its own history of both. Whether or not one shares that framing, it explains the format: this is a teaching event built on the belief that the knowledge should be distributed as widely as possible, which is why nobody is charged for it.
