How much spectrum one wireless channel occupies - wider carries more per transmission and leaves fewer non-overlapping channels.
It is the clearest trade in wireless design and the most commonly got wrong: the widest setting gives the best single-client speed test and the worst dense-deployment behaviour, because every neighbouring access point now overlaps and they take turns instead of working in parallel. In an office the right answer is usually narrower than the default, which is an argument that has to be made against a number everyone can see on a laptop.
