Network Virtualization using Generic Routing Encapsulation: a network virtualisation scheme carrying tenant traffic inside an existing tunnelling protocol.
It reused an encapsulation that already existed rather than defining a new one, which is a reasonable instinct and cost it the market: the field it used for load distribution was not one that existing hardware hashed on, so traffic did not spread across links the way operators expected. It is worth keeping in the record as a case where reusing a standard was the more conservative choice and the less successful one.
