Stands for: Long Term Evolution
The fourth-generation mobile standard, and the point at which mobile networks became entirely packet-based.
Dropping the circuit-switched path is the historically important part: voice stopped being a separate system and became an application on the data network, which is why call quality became a quality-of-service problem rather than a switching one. Most of the world still runs on it, and it remains the fallback that carries service when the newer radio is unavailable - which makes its security properties current rather than historical.
