Local area network: a network within one site, under one administration, where the links are yours and bandwidth is cheap.
The defining property was never distance. It was that you own the cable, so bandwidth costs nothing per byte and latency is small enough to ignore - which is why protocols designed for a local area assume both and break when moved. The word local has since become a claim about trust and administration rather than about metres, and a cloud subnet with nothing local about it is still called one.
