backup
termops culturesecurity
A copy kept so that data can be recovered - which is only true once a restore has been tested.
The operational rule is that nobody has backups, only restores, and an untested copy is a belief rather than a control. Three properties decide whether it survives an incident rather than merely a mistake: it must be isolated enough that whoever compromised the system cannot delete it, recent enough to satisfy the acceptable loss, and restorable fast enough to matter. Ransomware turned the first of those from a nicety into the whole point.
