Microcamp

The pioneering was the audience, not the technology - and it taught on the machines the market reserve built.

Eloy Tuffi opened Flama Microinformática in Vila Mariana, São Paulo, in 1977, and it became Microcamp after he moved to Campinas in 1981. It is generally described as Brazil's first computer school. Over four decades it reports having taught more than two million students in Brazil, Portugal, Spain and Argentina.

**The founder was not a technologist. He already owned four English-language schools**, having started selling books and English courses at eighteen, and he came to computing as somebody who understood how to sell instruction to ordinary people. That matters more than it sounds, and it explains the shape of everything that followed.

**Because the pioneering thing was the audience, not the technology.** Courses in computing already existed in Brazil in 1977. They were for programmers, attached to the mainframes that were the only computers most organisations had, and they were expensive and restricted. Tuffi's proposition was that ordinary people - not future programmers, just people - would pay for computer instruction if it were affordable. **That is the founding insight of essentially every technical training business since, and it was not obvious at the time.**

**The pedagogy came from language teaching, and it fits better than anyone expected.** A language school runs on monthly fees, graded levels, small classes and the assumption that competence is built by repeated practice over months rather than transferred in a week. **Apply that structure to computing and it works, for exactly the same reason: both are skills, not bodies of knowledge**, and a skill acquired in a five-day intensive decays at a rate that surprises the person who paid for it. The group later ran schools combining English with computing, which is the same recognition from the other direction.

**And here the two halves of this timeline's market-reserve story meet in one detail.** Tuffi equipped his first school with twelve microcomputers: **CP 500 and TK 85 machines** - domestically built, the products of exactly the protected industry written up elsewhere on this site. **The reserve manufactured the hardware; schools like this manufactured the users.** Neither half works without the other, and the policy documents of the period discuss the first at length and the second barely at all.

The commercial history is a franchising history: first branch in Ribeirão Preto in 1986, Portugal in 1989, a franchise system launched in 1994 and taken abroad the following year, a training institute for its own staff and franchisees in 1995. **Franchising is what let a teaching method scale beyond the reach of the person who invented it**, and the institute exists because a franchised school is only as good as its worst instructor - which is the same problem the authorised-training entries on this site describe from the vendor's side.

**The number worth carrying away is the denominator.** The market reserve entry records employment in informatics and automation rising from about 42,000 to about 74,000 people across the 1980s - that is the industry. Two million people passed through these classrooms. **Most of them did not become engineers, and that is the point: a country does not become able to use computers by training its computer industry, it does so by training everybody else.** The reserve gets the policy histories; this got the students.
