Ekahau

Wi-Fi design and survey software born in a University of Helsinki machine learning group, sold to Ookla in 2018 and carried into Accenture in 2026.

Ekahau was founded in 2000 by University of Helsinki researchers from the CoSCo group at the Helsinki Institute for Information Technology, among them Henry Tirri, Petri Myllymäki, Teemu Roos, Kimmo Valtonen, Tomi Silander, Petri Kontkanen, Antti Tuominen, Jussi Lahtinen and Hannes Wettig. By 2018 it was, in the words of the parties to its sale, the leading solution provider for enterprise wireless network design and troubleshooting, with 75 professionals, most of them in Finland.

In October 2018 Nexit Ventures sold Ekahau to Ookla LLC, the Speedtest company and a subsidiary of Ziff Davis. The price was not disclosed; Helsingin Sanomat estimated it at 100 to 130 million euros, and the Finnish Center for Artificial Intelligence recorded the deal as Finnish machine learning research behind an acclaimed acquisition.

The product line today, from Ekahau's own site: Ekahau Plan, Measure Pro and the Software Suite, the Sidekick 2 measurement device, AI Pro Online, Survey, Analyzer and Optimizer, with a training arm. The footer of that site read, on the day this entry was written, 'Ookla, LLC., an Accenture company': on 2 March 2026 Accenture announced from Barcelona that it would acquire Ookla from Ziff Davis, naming Speedtest, Downdetector, Ekahau and RootMetrics as the brands and declining to disclose terms.

The lineage is unusual for this record. The Finnish Center for Artificial Intelligence filed the sale under Finnish machine learning research behind an acclaimed acquisition, and the founders' names are a research group's roster rather than a field engineer's: of the three survey tools on this timeline, Ekahau is the one that began as university algorithms.
