Stands for: very high frequency / ultra high frequency

Very high frequency (30 to 300 MHz) and ultra high frequency (300 MHz to 3 GHz): the line-of-sight bands.

Above roughly 30 MHz the ionosphere generally stops bending signals back, so coverage is limited by the horizon and by obstructions, which is why antenna height matters so much. VHF carries FM broadcasting, air traffic control, and marine radio; UHF carries mobile telephony, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, and most television. Both are reliable and predictable compared with HF, and tropospheric ducting occasionally carries them far beyond the horizon anyway.
