Suelette Dreyfus's narrative history of the Australian computer underground of the late 1980s and early 1990s, researched by a young hacker known as Mendax - later the world's most recognisable name in leaking, Julian Assange.
The book is the best surviving portrait of a national scene that never got Hollywood's attention: the International Subversives, the NASA and Nortel intrusions, the WANK worm's likely birthplace, and the police work that ended it. It was released free online years before that was normal, and it remains the standard answer when someone asks what the underground actually felt like from inside.
